Developing film earlier today, I used the downtime to continue scanning some 35mm negs. I estimate I've over 40,000 so I'm some way off getting them done, particularly as I seem to be shooting more film still than I'm scanning.

I came across some negatives fro Georgetown, Penang, some which I'd scanned previously, but not all. Penang is a favourite place of mine, one of many, true. Despite the tourism, its' capital, Georgetown has retained its identity, its crumbling old World Heritage Centre core complimented by increasingly modern infrastructure, it manages to be genteel and vibrant at once. Need a bus back to the resort beach of Batu Ferringhi at night - you'll need to stand in the road near the Hard Life Cafe/Chulia Court - the bus stop is barricaded off by food stalls. No cause to go hungry whilst you're waiting.

Anyway, here are a few images of the Love Lane/Stewart Lane area, and others, illustrating the old building, murals and other street art, alongside the older, commercial signage that always seems to be crumbling, but which always remains. At a time when it appears uncertain when I'll be able to return, I'm confident that when I can, this charming, welcoming city by the sea will be there.
I was finishing River of Time which I'd not read for a while, and the sheer pleasure of understanding the knowledge and sentiment of the book, and the overall sadness it described, was almost overwhelming. That led me to contemplate how knowledge and information are shared, beyond the immediacy and superficiality of social media platforms that seem to have evolved into mechanisms of conflict.

The book offered me ways of acknowledging shared knowledge of place, and of some experiences, beyond the nostalgic, far beyond the realm of the casual visitor, which seem to embed the senses of place, time and understanding somewhere in the psyche, if not the very flesh. The book inspired me to rethink of my own being, my knowledge and experiences, in a deeper way than I have been less able, or less inclined, to achieve in recent years, but in a way I used to find commonplace and readily accessible.

Thinking about our experience as sentient beings and the collation of knowledge as we progress through life, and the senses and other mechanisms that facilitate that process, led me to further consider the purpose and intent of these actions and experiences. Are we merely experiencing as the inevitable result of living, or is there a role, a responsibility to share, or disseminate that which we think we know, or have experienced?

I progressed to thinking of travels, and intimate knowledge of place, accrued over many years, the association with the written word, and of course with images, of the mind, the pixel, and in silver. In this philosophical interlude, I rested upon the comfort of Penang, a place remote and foreign from my everyday, but a place which is to me as familiar, and as comfortable as my favourite sofa. That's not to say it doesn't have it's challenges, such as the rampant over-commercialisation of the the Chew Jetties, but it resonates such a pull on me that I'm compelled to share a little.

One of the places I was able to visit on my last stay in Penang was the Asia Camera Museum. Easily found when approaching along Armenian Street in one direction, it's signage is completely hidden when coming the other way. Look up, it's on the first floor, near a crossroads. We were given a short tour by a charming woman of this seemingly expanding collection, which contained the studio and darkroom of a long-gone Penang photographer, typical of the small portrait studio set-ups in Penang maybe from the 1930's to the 1980's. There is good collection of interesting old cameras, and a large format Magic Lantern with coloured slides. There is a real sense of place here, of the studio in the town where it existed, recording, making portraits of people over the decades before access to immediate digital imagery was commonplace. Linger here awhile, contemplate, the experience will reward the receptive.

Had a look at a bit photography, was tempted awhile by FB, then onto work. Jesus, all I want is some new business cards, but Moo not having it, limiting me to 2 designs when they'd promised 5. See previous blog, no doubt it's my fault, IT limitations well-document here. Some days I'm convinced that the only technology I can operate is the car and cameras.

Been a while since I updated Tripadvisor, still find myself months behind in terms of places visited etc, but i popped a few recent ones on. Surprise, it seemed to freeze so the happy tale of a magnificent lunch on Sunday will be postponed until one can next be bothered.

Happy to record that the darkroom is back in use, produced some pleasant images taken in Vietnam with Long Thanh, nice prints, sent one of to Stills Gallery in Edinburgh for their fundraising sale. Must get more time in the darkroom, even made up Selenium toner to encourage myself, there's a treat.

Had a bit of a go at photographing small minerals, fingernail-sized, sample attached. Quite happy with progress, not perfect but I'm getting there.

Can't believe how quickly time is going, almost a year since we were in Bangkok last, but we did have a quick trip to Samye Ling Tibetan monastery a week or so ago - great fun. Enjoyed a good stay at The Famous Star Inn at Moffat, lively public-bar and very good food.

Just popped an image from the Bangkok trip below, a rather determined you chap cornering at speed in his uncle's robe - the uncle is a monk called Prateep, who we had a long chat with after taking these images. You never know who you're going to meet, it was good to spend time with Prateep, away from the troubles of the world.

As usual I'm intending to be more regular on here, but the demands on my time, coupled with procrastination and an unfocused distractable personality disorder make my offerings less frequent than I intend.

A bientot!

Had some difficulty accessing here again, until I discovered that Lady Stark had locked me out of my Google account and monopolised the PC with her own. On starting to rectify I was offered guidance in Afrikaans; no doubt a fine language but not one familiar to oneself, can only imagine the confusion of Lady Stark, unless she has a hitherto unknown element to her heritage.
Anyway, here's an image of Coral, taken on film using a Contax G2 camera, 35mm lens and Rollie Retro 400 film. <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">It seems to me that it's always a privilege to visit Bangkok, and I managed to stay there three times on my last trip. Thankfully Joy enjoys it too; staying in Chinatown gives easy access to markets, grand street-food, the river, and countless temples of all sizes and levels of importance.
Despite being back in the UK since early December, I haven't got anywhere near completing the work on my images. I'm still developing film and processing digital images, here's a sample of the latter, all but one taken in Chinatown.

I've been enjoying burlesque as performance for a couple of years now, but have only photographed it recently. These artistes performed at The Hidden Kitten Club, Newcastle upon Tyne, in January 2016.

She's quite a talent, emerging tonight into her first paid professional gig.

Looking forward to seeing tonight's costume, which I funded for the little bugger! Last time out the angel wings were spectacular, but there's a new theme, show and costume every time with Coral.💃Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8832071155292979116.post-38613163212369964252015-04-22T03:20:00.000+01:002015-04-22T03:20:10.307+01:00My Son - Cham TemplesYesterday I visited the World Heritage Site at My Son. The Cham civilisation flourished in Vietnam a couple of thousand years ago, and this site represented the finest expression of different Cham architectual styles in existence.

I arrived early, and was pretty much alone with Joy for two hours or so until the tourists started to trickle, then later flood, onto the precious site. The entrance fee is about £3, I'm wondering if it should be at least triple that in order to increase revenue, and perhaps a limit on the numbers visiting the site at any one time. I had all the time I needed to appreciate and photograph the site, but seeing large crowds of people arriving and flooding the site was a lttle unedifying; furthermore the challenge of fully appreciating the site must surely be greater when large numbers of tourists are there?

I'd read that there were around 20 of the original 70 sructures present, the rest having been destroyed by American bombing during 1968/69. Well done America, you have destroyed a unique site of great beauty, and historical and cultural significance, hang your ignorant superficial heads in fucking shame. There is not a shred of justification in bombing this place.

Of the remaining structues, some are superb, some have had a little restoration, others remain badly damaged, and surrounded by bomb craters. In one of the buildings serving as a small on-site museum there are a couple of bomb casings found on the site. There is need of further restoration, and I suspect that the site might benefit from further archaeological exploration, I sincerely hope the funds can be found.

My Son is a place of great beauty, and is of global importance as a site representing Cham culture. It is a mystical, spiritual place, deserving of our attention and care, in order to preserve and develop it to promote future learning and understanding.

I'll post images when I can in a couple of weeks.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8832071155292979116.post-22779648830458224492015-04-19T02:31:00.002+01:002015-04-19T02:31:17.909+01:00Out and AboutBeen in Vietnam for 2 weeks now, sat on a balcony overlooking rice fields on the outskirts of Hoi An. Early morning, sun hot.

A dozen or so white ducks are feeding in a large pond below my balcony, there is a smallholding by a lane about 80 metres away. Beyond that the rice fields stretch away for about a mile, and to my right is the town.

Even on a Sunday there is activity, sounds of light construction, the Vietnamese are the most industrious hardworking people I've ever come across. In the twenty years I've been coming here its always amazed me how hard they work as a society.

I've enjoyed time in Saigon on this trip, there is real high-rise now, and an underground rail system under construction. I seriously question whether that will have any impact on the traffic though, as so muchnof Vietnamese life is lived on the street. Despite massive infrastructure projects the tiny, temporary street cafes still pop up wherever there are 3 square metres of space, ladies walking with crockpot cookers and ingredients suspended from opposite ends of their bamboo pole.

I was sorry to see the arrival of expensive designer boutiques on Dong Khoi and Le Loi, obviously attached to the big hotels; incidentally The Continental seems to have been spruced up, and they have commandeered the pavement overlooking the Opera House and set up a poor imitation of the old "Continental Shelf", this shameful edifice people by uncomfortable looking tourists. The small area of high-end shops resembles a mini-Singapore, I hope that it remains a small area, "designer Saigon" takes me shiver with discontent.

Breakfast beckons, a bientot.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8832071155292979116.post-2602666082565835252014-05-05T11:04:00.003+01:002014-05-05T11:04:59.141+01:00Weardale ProjectDelivered some framed prints to Chatterbox Café on Friday, really worth a visit, there's great-value art and crafts there, and not just mine. Took the opportunity to drive one of the cycle routes out of the Dale, to Middleton in Teesdale; I was photographing the hill-climbs that cyclists love, some pretty challenging sections both leaving Weardale and coming back to it.

Spent a day walking and photographing around Blanchland, pleased to report that the Lord Crewe Arms is open, and looking good. Enjoyed a swifty in the garden after a short circular walk in the sunshine. Photographer a very timid Snipe and 3 chicks on the moor.

Short drive over to Frosterley to introduce our chums to the delights of The Black Bull. Short visit, enjoyed the sunshine on a table by the roadside. All in all a groovy few days, photographing and delivering prints for sale; back to processing now as I owe a few people some mages from last week.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8832071155292979116.post-16942547317863728582014-04-26T12:39:00.001+01:002014-04-26T12:39:58.901+01:00Frustrations and Lessons<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Almost sold out of my framed prints last weekend, at the brilliant Chatterbox Café and art shop, in St John's Chapel, Co. Durham. Looking to replace them quickly, I've been frustrated that frames ordered have been delayed, and next day delivery will actually take place next week; annoying and irritating.

Equally frustrating is my decision not to make darkroom prints earlier in the week. Had I done so, and put them in different frames, I'd have had some work for Chatterbox this weekend. I'm risk-averse, but have learned this week to have a contingency, as things don't always go well.

The Weardale images are selling well, so I'm replacing them with copies of work that has sold, but also with a new print, and a panoramic of Lintzgarth arch which I hope will attract interest. Hoping that the Weardale poster will sell over the summer too. One sold already so it's just getting the right people through the door.

Saw a cracking new product at Digitalab yesterday, high quality softback book, ideal for promoting work, but maybe pricey to sell. Must explore the opportunity of bulk discounts with Jill, the owner of Digitalab. More realistically I'll be getting quotes from printers for book production soon.

The image here was taken on a misty day at Grove Rake, Weardale, and given a vintage treatment.

Have done a shed-load of work on the River Wear/Weardale project I'm working on, really progressing but not quite ready for the book. Working on this has meant a lot of walking the fells and burns of Weardale, I'm looking forward to the weather improving as I'm tired of walking in wet bogs, though only experienced knee-deep snow once over the winter months.

Have managed to stay a couple of times at the wonderful lodging in Cowshill, The Calf House. Adjoining the Cowshill Hotel, this groovy little place is run by Sue, whose mother Tiffy owns the Hotel. Great place to stay, good value at The Calf House and the pub. A week or two ago we stayed there and managed a slog along boggy Sedling Vein, down the dale and back via West Blackdene and Wearhead. Photographed the start of the River Wear for the first time, at Wearhead.

Talking of the photography, I'm delighted to be named by Digitalab as a featured photographer (http://digitalab.co.uk/blog/2014/04/22/digitalab-featured-photographer-graeme-stark/) that link should take you to the feature.

Have established a good working relationship with Cameron at Chatterbox Café in St John's Chapel, Weardale. Really happy to be placing my prints in the Chatterbox Art Shop, framed prints are selling really well there, so well that it's hard to keep up with replacing them at times. Unframed prints are available too, I work both digitally and with film cameras, and traditional darkroom prints are for sale as well as digital prints.

Looking forward to keeping this blog up to date in future, on a weekly basis at least. Don't forget to have a look at my website, it's changing and improving all the time.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8832071155292979116.post-88939099948681913932014-01-05T15:03:00.002+00:002014-01-05T15:03:29.181+00:00Another Image from a film scan<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">This one was taken in Hong Kong Jade Market some years ago. I don't put a great deal of images up, but they appear at times.

Website long due a revision, will be doing that very soon.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8832071155292979116.post-63129173736747687312013-11-19T14:20:00.001+00:002013-11-19T14:20:45.084+00:00Just Now<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So just as I was in the mood to photograph junk mail, the junk mail dried up! Subsequent erratic deliveries have not inspired me to continue for now, but watch this space.

Been busy out and about, including more work on the River Wear project. Need to spend even more time editing the work into a coherent body.

Been doing a fair bit of networking with the New Wave organisation, can wholeheartedly recommend involvement if there is one near you. If not, why not start one?

Couple of evening jobs this week, lovely working with people who are basically having a good time. Always up for delivering the goods to clients though, high quality, on time, to meet brief.

Out a couple of ties walking too last week; neglected part of existence in October. Brilliant walk at Baal Hill Wood last weekend, quite short, not to strenuous, but endless opportunities to capture autumn colours, even if I do then choose to present them in mono. Enjoying showing some work on www.fotoblur.com - a groovy creative community for photographers and artists, well worth a look.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8832071155292979116.post-35677476197746147272013-11-04T15:52:00.001+00:002013-11-04T15:55:03.086+00:00Junk Mail.I've wondered a lot about the amount of rubbish that comes through my letterbox every day, on a temporary visit before it is almost immediately deposited in the re-cycling bin. The cost of production, distribution, etc, etc must be enormous, and I doubt whether many of the myriad offers are taken up.

And I'm just talking here about the leaflets and cards that are thrown through at random, not the enveloped crap that actually bears my name. So I decided, on a whim, to photograph the stuff each day, maybe for a month maybe for longer, may be for less if I get bored with it. Just looking at the stuff makes me wonder at the kind of people who might respond to the offers and incentives. I mean seriously - almost £5 for lunch? That equates to £140 per month assuming 5 working days each week, not sure of anyone with the appetite or will to undertake that, can you imagine the weight gain?

Again, 2 loaves of bread for £1.60 - I just can't consume that much; I don't like freezing and I can buy a fresh loaf for 80p when I need it, so where's the saving? Insurance, I am covered thanks, and if I was looking for something I'd do it online or with a local broker, not reach for my junk mail leaflet.
I'm not going to rant here every day but I am looking to post the images of the junk. I'll think of something useful to do with the images, but the items themselves will be re-cycled daily, as always.
Pleased to say that the River Wear project is ongoing, and that I've made lots of images in Weardale, and will continue to do so.

Have also become involved with a poet, Jules Clare, and I'm collaborating with Jules and other poets on a project called Poetry in the Dale. This features live poetry performance in 11 Weardale villages; I'm photographing the events, and the intention is to produce a book as a record of the project.

Was quite chuffed that BBC Radio Newcastle did a short feature on the project, thanks to my dear chum Russell Ward, who was also kind enough to let us stay over at his place in Stanhope one night, and Russell also introduced us to the wonderful Black Bull pub in Frosterley. It seems we have become frequent visitors since that first visit. Another poet who has performed is Michelle Malone, "Miki" to her chums and admirers.

Audiences haven't been large, but there have been some excellent poems produced and read. It's quite an effort to get up to Weardale every week, but ultimately worth it I think. I'm also photographing a poetry event in Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.

It's still interesting to be photographing the River Wear, and Weardale as the seasons change. Weather has been challenging lately, but we've still managed to get out photographing, even if the mists have curtailed our hill-walking somewhat. This image of Lintzgarth Arch, near Rookhope was taken at the end of September, late on a bright afternoon.

It was interesting to take part in the first Brougham Fotofest, at the end of September. With over 20 photographers the event was a grand collaboration, I sold some work, and plans are being made for another Fotofest next year. I exhibited framed prints taken in Weardale, one of which is now for sale at Chatterbox Cafe/Art Shop in St. John's Chapel. The weather is looking favourable tomorrow, so if all goes to plan another day in Weardale beckons, desperate to get a few walks in before winter descends.
